Juma Kahema is company director and tourism manager. He knows EVERYTHING about the Usambaras, and has been EVERYWHERE in and around these mountains, working as farmer, trader, community mobiliser, development worker and of late tourist guide. Just go ahead and try him, ask him anything about this piece of Africa.

Subi

Subi is assistant hotel manager and in charge of house keeping and flowers and a lot of other things too. She was our first employee at Maweni, and we hope she will stay with us forever.

DoniDonisia is another "old" employee of Maweni and has grown with us. She is in charge of the bar, but really wants do more cooking in the future.

FatumaWe won't forget how Fatuma came to join us. It was one of the very first days and she walked here to ask for a job. We didn't know what to say, the hotel was not even open yet and there we were working with starting a kitchen garden. She said: fine, pulled a neatly folded Khanga cloth out of her handbag to cover her nice dress and started digging. Five years later she is the backbone of housekeeping, still always friendly.
[acidfree:68] Angelina has been cooking in Maweni since the start and is now head chef. Try her "Africadelli", Filled Peppers, Moussaka, Green Peas Soup or Banana Cake and you will like her as much as we do. She really likes children and has six of her own, for whom she built a nice house right next to Maweni.
[acidfree:67 align=right] Grace came to Maweni for a practical and stayed. She is one of our chefs and we are only worried that such a charming girl may get married and move away some day.
[acidfree:66] Even Judith was looking for a practical and found a job. She is now a chef and our store keeper. But some days you might see her as a popular tour guide, taking guests to Sakkarani on the other side of the mountain, where the Benedictine Fathers grow macademia nuts, quinine and wine.
[acidfree:65 align=right] Grace is a Montessori teacher and runs our popular kindergarten for staff and guest children. All children (and parents) love her.
[acidfree:64] Hauke is our "cowboy". He looks after all the different animals in Maweni: cows, hens, turkeys and rabbits. When he goes off to cut grass for the cows he puts his radio on for them, so they won't feel lonely.
[acidfree:63 align=right] Steven is one of our watchmen.
[acidfree:62] Saidi is working as a watchman and looking after the dogs.
[acidfree:61 align=right] Mzee Emanuel Saruni is a watchman.
[acidfree:60] Charles is one of our watchmen.
